Car Wax

Best Car Wax Comparison Table

Car paint fades off over time due to exposure to various elements including debris, dust, salt, airborne contaminants, and the worst culprit, ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun.

Car Dust

Waxing, however, helps prevent/reduce fading caused by most of these contaminants, and also makes it easier to clean or wash the car yourself. Waxing also makes your car cleaner and even more vibrant.

The process of waxing your car begins with choosing the right wax for the job. Going for the best quality wax for a bright shine and protection holds the key to a perfect job and value for money.

You also don’t have to hire anyone to do the job. All you need are the right tools and handy work skills to wax the car yourself. Applying and polishing the car should be a fun and fulfilling experience for anyone that loves his/her car.

What Types of Car Wax Are There on the Market?

There are two types of wax on the market today: Natural carnauba wax and synthetic wax. Both of these come in several different forms, though produce surprising results when applied and appropriately polished.

1. Natural Carnauba Wax

Carnauba is a compound extracted from the leaves of a Brazilian palm tree. The compound is then processed for purification, then mixed with beeswax or turpentine to produce natural carnauba wax.

Carnauba

Pros
  • It gives a warm, beautiful, and deep shine to the car.
  • Carnauba wax is mostly recommended on dark-colored and black car paint.
  • The natural wax helps protect the car paint from harsh elements among other elements. It also comes in handy in detailing.
Cons
  • Compared to synthetic wax, carnauba wax tends to wear off quickly, lasting up to 4 months before it starts wearing off.
  • Carnauba wax is only available in two colors; white and yellow. Yellow carnauba wax is considered the best grade, the purest, and also the most expensive.

2. Synthetic Wax (also known as Paint Sealant)

Commonly known as paint sealant, the synthetic wax is the most common in the market today. As the name suggests, the wax is manufactured chemically using polymers that bond perfectly with paint.

Pros
  • Synthetic wax lasts a lot longer than natural carnauba wax. The wax lasts at least 12 months although the numbers can go higher depending on the quality and brand of the same. Local weather conditions also affect synthetic wax’s durability.
Cons
  • Although longer lasting, synthetic wax doesn’t match the look, shine, and appeal of carnauba wax.

Different Forms of Wax

Synthetic and natural carnauba wax come in several different forms. Each form has its uses, applications, and advantages, a reason you need to have some understanding of each form before ordering or using any of these. Discussed below are the common forms of wax you should know about.

1. Paste wax2. Liquid wax3. Spray wax4. Colored wax
Paste wax has been around for hundreds of years. It has a distinctive hard texture which makes it somewhat challenging to apply on a cold surface. Experts however recommend keeping the surface warm (keep the engine running) to facilitate smooth application of the same. Natural carnauba wax is considerably the best paste wax to use and especially if looking for a beautiful glossy shine for your car. Adding natural oil to the wax also helps enhance the shine and glossiness.
Liquid wax is considerably smoother in texture when compared to paste wax. You can also apply the wax by hand or with a special machine, which makes waxing a lot easier. Whether synthetic or natural carnauba wax, liquid wax has to be augmented with synthetic polymers that enhance its smoothness and enhance its longevity.
Spray wax is commonly used for detailing. Many people prefer using spray wax to apply a quick layer of the same to an already existing layer of wax. This is mostly needed when the original layer of wax starts wearing off, or need just a light lick for that extra glossiness and boost. Spray wax shouldn’t however be used as substitutes for liquid or paste wax.
This pigmented form of wax is specially designed to match different paint jobs and colors. Most professional detailers use colored wax to fill paint defects from swirls and scratches. Some vehicle owners, however, do not like the idea of using colored wax to create an even color tone simply because modern vehicles have two layers of paint and a transparent coat. To them, applying colored wax on the clear coat would be pointless as it wouldn’t make any difference.

  • Easy to apply and remove, by machine or by hand

If you want to get some great treatment for your vehicles paint, then the best wax when you want carnauba is the P21S Carnauba Car Wax.

Benefits Of Waxing Your Car

To many people, waxing your car is a waste of time and resources. This however isn’t the case considering waxing preserves your car’s look and feel, and even improves your safety and to some degree, performance. Some of the benefits of waxing your car are outlined below.

1. It Protects The Car From Scratches

Applying a clear coat of wax on your car keeps the car paint sealed, hence provides extra cushioning against elements that cause scratching. These include exhaust, sand, grit, UV light, bird doo, and simple scratches. Wax does a better job protecting your car from dents, scratches, and common types of wear and tear to the car paint as compared to most paints and primers on the market today.

2. Keeps The Paint ProtectedCar

Fine sand particles, grime, and grit can scrape the car paint or primer if the car isn’t waxed. This causes the paint to degrade causing extensive damage over time. Waxing however creates a buffer between the paint and elements that scrape the paint.

3. Reduce Refinishing and Repair Costs

While leasing a car may seem like an affordable option, any damage including paint issues, scratches, and discoloration have to be handled on your account. The dealership will first inspect the vehicle before accepting it back at the end of the lease period. Having the car waxed a few moments after picking it from the dealership can save you on repair costs significantly.

4. Makes You A Better Driver

According to research, drivers that take care of their cars personally are better drivers than those that don’t. An excellent example of such are drivers with clean, neat, and shiny cars. These drivers drive more carefully hence become better drivers over time. Waxing your vehicle increases chances of taking proper care of the same, even when driving in the most dangerous roads. Although these may seem like simple investments that make your car neat, you are investing in your safety as well.

5. The Process of Applying Wax is Easy and Straightforward

You don’t need an entire afternoon to wax your car. Thanks to modern technology, applying a fresh coat of wax only takes several minutes to an hour. You can also re-wax the car 2-4 times a year painlessly.

Car Wax Buyer’s Guide

The right wax is needed for different applications. Nevertheless, all forms of wax require elbow grease, patience, and time to bring out perfect results. How much wax you need, and time taken depends entirely on the vehicle size, how fast you can work, and the type of wax. It however shouldn’t take more than 2 hours to pull out a decent job.

This guide will focus on car wax alone. Don’t be confused when works like polish or wax are used interchangeably all through. Some forms of waxes work by removing embedded contaminants and oxidation, while others don’t. Some of the factors to consider when choosing car wax include:

1. The Age Of The Car

For cars less than two years old, spray wax may be all you need. As mentioned earlier on, spray wax doesn’t last long and will wear off faster than liquid or paste wax. Spray wax is therefore recommended for special occasions and weekly applications. Don’t, however, expect a new car to shine better than it already does.
Age of Your Car

If you plan using the car for more than five years, waxing should save you lots of time and money spent on repairs. Cars older than five years may, however, need a stronger, more durable coat of wax to preserve its paint color and radiance. This is especially recommended if you suspect the existing coating to be oxidized or have grime embedded. Liquid wax is considered the best option for older cars, and especially if you need to restore the car’s original shine and glory.

2. Look out for Abrasion

Some types of wax can be abrasive. This is because wax contains tiny particles that could be abrasive, or even have fine articles that leave a haze or fine scratches on the car’s finish. Dark-colored cars are known to show scratches more efficiently as compared to lighter-colored ones. For this reason, steer away from waxing products with low hazing and scratching scores in tests. Most car wax manufacturers however indicate its rating on the packaging, as well as if it is safe to use on a clear-coat finish.

3. Plastic On Your Car

Some porous plastic parts of your car, including the bumpers, door trim, and body panels can attract or leave a visible residue after waxing. Although newer and high-end vehicles may not have any of these, older cars are not an exception. For this reason, consider going for waxing products with relatively high scores in plastic compatibility tests. If possible, a commercial plastic cleaner can be used to clean any wax on plastic surfaces.

How To Wax Your Car

Once you have chosen a car paint sealant or wax, there are several ways that you can apply it to your vehicle. You could apply it using either a polisher or by hand. The interesting thing is that paste wax waxes can also be applied using a polisher.

There are so many how-to guides on the internet that you can follow, but here are a couple of tips for you to consider. We also think that it would be advisable that you check out the video below and this WikiHow guide for some application technique tips.

Waxing Tip

  1. Use a decent gentle scrubber (one that won’t scratch your car) and mild detergent to clean your car and dry it well.
    Wash Car
  2. Although TV shows and movies often depicting people waxing their vehicles outdoors, we advise you to do it indoors. Direct sunlight could alter the final result as it can cause uneven heating in different areas of your vehicle, altering the amount of wax that gets absorbed, and may even leave residues.
  3. Test the product. Before applying any wax product on your car, we recommend that you try it first by applying it on an inconspicuous part of your car like the doorjamb. Irrespective of how much you spend, the claims manufacturers make concerning longevity, or how hard you work, do not expect wax to last forever. Even all of the top waxing products we have tested before only lasted a couple of months.
  4. Avoid using old rags. The clothe you use to apply wax on your vehicle could make the task easier for you. We’ve found that using terry cloth rags can make it much harder to remove residues compared to using microfiber rags, which are readily available in most auto part stores, supermarkets, and big-box chains. They are normally sold in packages of 5 to 10 rags and for a reasonable price too.
  5. Split your car into different sections, and work on one section at a time.
  6. Follow application instructions provided by the manufacturer. While this may sound quite basic, remember that each product is different from the other and should, therefore, be used accordingly.
These are just some of the basic tips.

Hand Application

  1. Apply car paint sealants or wax in the shade. If the product sits on the car for too long or dries of quickly, this may make it hard to buff it off.
  2. Always make sure that your car is dry before applying car paint sealant or wax. Water droplets on the paint could make the product streak, making it unnecessarily hard to buff off.
  3. Thin it out! Apply the thinnest coats possible. If you want more depth and shine, you won’t be able to do it with just one thick coat. This just makes it really hard to remove and streak the sealant or wax. Apply one coat and buff it off before applying a second thinner coat. Check the product’s label to see the amount of time a single coat will take to cure before you can apply another (normally take twelve to eighteen hours).
  4. To achieve the thinnest, most even coat, consider using a poly foam wax applicator. These applicators are super absorbent, reusable, washable, and durable. The great thing is that they are inexpensive, so do not be afraid to throw the one you have when it gets too soiled.
  5. Buff all the haze away with a microfiber rag. A quality towel, such as the Miracle Towel should buff off your car’s pain to a fabulous shine as you rub off the waxy residue. The fibres of a microfiber are statically-charged, and therefore, grab the wax residue so there’s less dusting. Microfiber rags do not shed lint and their tiny fibers polish the paint as you buff. Rotate the towel often to reveal the clean side. Keep an extra pair near just in case the first gets covered with wax.
  6. If you do get an uneven shine or streaks, you would be glad to know that this can be easily corrected using quick detail sprays. Mist the affected area with Pinnacle Crystal Mist Detail Spray or Wolfgang Instant Detail Spritz and buff the problem away.

Machine Application

  1. To apply wax, use a foam finishing pad. Foam finishing pads are absorbent and soft yet firm enough to stand the pressure of the application machine. These pads are perfect for applying any type of wax, including paste wax. To the right you will see a Lake Country Gray Pad.
  2. If you are applying paste wax, spread it on the pad just like you would when buttering a slice of bread. Turn the wax jar upside down and place some wax on a plastic sandwich bag then rub the it on the pad; alternatively, you could use a putty knife. If you are using a liquid sealant or wax, simply pour three 3-inch lines of wax around the pad’s edge.
  3. If you are planning on using a liquid sealant or wax, press your polisher to the paint and spread it over a panel before switching on the machine. This will make it less likely for there to be a splatter.
  4. If you have a dual-action polisher, set it to max speed of 3. Check the wax label for specific directions; nevertheless, this is often the fastest speed you will need when applying wax. Spread it over the panel until it’s evenly covered. Turn off the machine before you lift it off.
  5. Buff off the wax using a microfiber. Once you’re done applying the wax, buff it off using a Miracle Towel. Some wax products allow users to apply wax to the entire car before buffing, but many don’t. If the product doesn’t, buffing by hand is often more efficient. If the wax you are using can be applied on the entire vehicle before you buff, then consider using a buffing machine fitted with a terry cloth bonnet set over a lamb’s wool pad for cushioning or microfiber. Unlike terry cloth, microfiber does not shed off lint, but the cloth to use is all up to you.

You can tell when your car needs to be waxed by watching the way that water runs off of it – it nice beads are not formed then your car needs to be waxed again or use a quick detailing wax to top it off.

If you would like to further protect your car, we recommend that you wax it every three months, or four times per year. However often you decide to wax, it is definitely worth having some sort of regimen. If you fail to do this, it leaves your car open to fading paint and cosmetic damage, which could cause the resale value of your car to go down.

When Is The Best Time For Me To Wax My Car?

It might feel good to wax your vehicle while the sun is shining full blast during the summer where you can truly appreciate the gleaming exterior of your car.

However, we also recommend that your car be waxed in the winter during the cold months in order to protect it against the element. Cold and moisture can do really bad things to your car’s paint job and if you apply wax prior to the first frost setting in it will help to preserve its metal finish and your car will be kept looking fresh when the weather is gray.

The best time to wax your car is late afternoon with minimal sunlight and partly cloudy skies. If the wax is applied at dusk, it will give your car 12 hours before it is met with full sunlight once again. When you do the task during this time it will also help to keep the wax thin enough so that you can easily apply it. The best temperature is approximately 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit. That is the range where the wax will be easy to apply since it will be in liquid form.

What Is The Best Method For Waxing A Car?

Car Wax and Polish: Are They The Same Thing? Which One Goes On First?

Car wax and polish are products that are designed to help protect your car. There are numerous car protection and detailing steps that can be taken. These products all help to protect your vehicle’s paint job. Both wax and polish can be used at home and incorporated into your car washing routine. The can help your car stay looking great, if if done on a regular basis, your car will continue to look practically brand new.

Car Polish

This is used before applying the wax coat. Car polish is used for removing scratches, scrapes, dirt, and grease that washing does not remove. It is a type of car detailing and car wax prep product. Car polish is available in liquid, spray, and cream form and contains solvents that remove impurities so that the pain shines through on your vehicle.

Polishes differ from waxes since polish removes dirt but doesn’t offer any protection. Polish is used before wax and you want to add a fair amount of polish to your cloth. Use a circular movement when you are polishing or an electric car polisher can be used. However, you need to be careful, since if you do too much polishing, it might take too much paint off and expose the undercoat or primer.

Car Wax

This product is used after you wash and polish your vehicle in order to add a layer of protection and shine. It is a kind of paint sealant. If the paint has any stains or dirt on it, then it will be sealed on the car by the wax. Wax protects your vehicle from UV rays and that prevents dust and pollution from damaging your vehicle. It minimizes the moisture that comes into contact with the car’s paint, since corrosion is caused by water.

Many individuals think that their cars can be damaged by waxing them. However, if a good quality wax is used containing natural ingredient then that won’t happen. When wax is used it increases the life of your car and may be quite beneficial. Car wax can be applied very quickly and there are many different forms and brands of wax. You shouldn’t apply a great deal of wax since too much of it can damage your car’s paint job. The best thing to do is apply an even, thin layer using a soft cloth or sponge.

Does The Wax Color Need To Match The Paint Job Of Your Car?

Waxing is an absolute must if you want to keep your car in ideal order. Frequently people will forget this critical step. What does waxing actually do? It helps to protect your car against weather and debris, and makes it beautiful and shiny. Does the color of wax used need to match your car’s paint job? This question deserves more attention and discussion.

For quite some time there has been colored wax available. Some people say it’s worthless while others swear by it. The important question is do your wax color need to match your car. No is the simple answer. However, if you would like to tint the clear cot or enhance the color, then the answer is yes.

For regular every day wax for keeping your car cleaner longer and for protecting it, clear waxes work the best. The color of your vehicle is not changed by clear wax, and won’t make it look dirty or muddy, and will just help the top coat glisten and make your appear appear shinier. However, if your car has started to fade or you want it to look more true to its color, then colored wax might be a good option.

A majority of colored waxes don’t have high amounts of pigment in them so they won’t dramatically change your vehicle’s appearance. However, they can temporarily tint the clear coat and help bring the color out in your car. On a vehicle that has a good paint job still it won’t be really noticeable, but might be more obvious on a vehicle that has started to fad or has sun spots. If you happen to have a vehicle with those problems but you aren’t ready to get your paint restored or redone, then it could be a temporary fix to hold you over until you can resolve the issue.

Ultimately, nothing is better than having a good clear wax on your car. Clear waxes are universal so you won’t have to go out and purchase a new bottle of it for each vehicle that you own. Clear waxes will also be true to the color of your car and there won’t be the possibility of it changing your vehicle’s overall appearance. A clear coat will look the same regardless of what car it is used on and it will do the job.

If you would like to use a colored wax, we recommend that you find a wax as close in color as your vehicle as possible. Waxes that are not really close in color to your car might make it appear discolored and will definitely show spots that you missed when the car was waxed. Whatever you end up using, for best results, be sure to read the instructions from the manufacturer and follow them.

Conclusion

It is very important to always keep your car in the best shape possible. With help from a good quality car wax, you should be able to keep the vehicle’s sparkling shine well-maintained. That way, you will have a great sense of pride as you are driving down the road and it will increase your car’s longevity also. Hopefully our list will have the best car wax you are looking for.
