If you are in the market looking for a good and reliable ceiling fan, chances are you will find one that suits your needs by simply browsing through Costco, Walmart or Amazon. 1. Minka-Aire F518L-WH, Concept II LED White Flush Mount 44″ Ceiling Fan with Light & Remote Control – Editor’s Choice & Best Seller

Minka-Aire F518L-WH, Concept II LED White Flush Mount 44" Ceiling Fan with Light & Remote Control
  • White finish flushmount with integrated LED
  • Moves the air easily with its 44" blade span
  • 14 degree blade pitch maximizes comfort
  • Full-function hand-held remote control
  • Energy efficient

The Minka-Aire F518L-WH is a superior flush-mount ceiling fan that’s 44-inches wide with three blades at a 14-inch pitch and a 153x15mm motor size. The fan has a contemporary design and is available in various colors including brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, and white. Its airflow is 2,629 CFM (cubic feet per minute), and its estimated yearly energy cost is $8. Its remote control operated and comes with an integrated LED downlight, a cap for non-light use, and white opal glass. While the light is not that bright, it’s not that dim either.

Installing the F518l-WH is quick and easy, and the great thing about this fan is that it’s very quiet even at full speed. Another exciting thing about this fan is that its remote control allows you to reverse the fan’s direction without having to meddle with the motor. However, it is worth noting that the blades make a whirring noise when wind passes through them.

Pros
  • Comes with a remote control
  • Easy to install
  • Looks good
Cons
  • Not for larger rooms
  • Makes a whirring noise

This 52-inch, 5-blade ceiling fan by Hunter has reversible blades (stained oak on one side and Brazilian cherry on the other), a pull chain, two 60 watts Candelabra Incandescent bulbs, a bowl light kit that comes with Toffee glass and a reversible motor. You can install the fan with the light kit if you want. However, the light is pretty dim and cannot be used as the primary lighting for a room. The fan is gorgeous and fits easily into most décor. It is quite quiet even at the highest setting, which means that it can be installed in bedrooms. The Builder Deluxe comes in three mounting options – angled, standard, and flush. Installation is quite straightforward.

However, it is worth noting that its glass bowl is quite fragile. Several users have reportedly cracked it during installation. Also, it’d be better if it were remote controlled.

Pros
  • Beautiful fan
  • Three mounting options
  • Reversible motor
Cons
  • Doesn’t include remote control
  • Fragile glass dome
  • Dim light

For under $100, you can get the Westinghouse Comet Reversible 52-inch, 5-blade Ceiling fan which is capable of cooling a 360 square feet room. Compare to most fans available in the market today; this fan is quite simple. It features a 153x15mm cold-rolled reversible steel motor with three capacitors, which means you can use it all year round. The fan has a pull chain for setting rotation speed (three in total) and for switching the light on or off. It has an airflow of up to 5,199 CFM and is rated to operate at 61W without lights. This fan should cool you off when you need it to and runs silently. If by chance it breaks, the manufacturer, Westinghouse, backs the product with a two-year warranty on parts and a lifetime motor warranty.

However, the fan’s light could do with an upgrade as it is pretty dim. Also, several users have found it very hard to install.

Pros
  • Lifetime motor warranty
  • Affordable price
  • Reversible motor
Cons
  • Wobbles a bit sometimes
  • Dim lighting
  • Difficult to install

The Westinghouse Harmony ceiling fan is not just about making rooms cool; it is also about making your home look cool. The fan has two weathered maple blades with a modern twist, an integrated opal frosted glass light fixture, and a brushed nickel finish. Its 4,881 CFM airflow is capable of cooling a 144 square foot room. It is powered by a triple capacitor reversible silicon steel motor, which measures 153x20mm and has four fan speeds.

Like every other Westinghouse ceiling fan, the Harmony ceiling fan comes with a lifetime motor warranty and a two-year warranty on parts. Apart from it being stylish, the fan is quite powerful and super quiet despite it having only two blades. Sadly, it doesn’t come with remote control, and its lights are not that bright. Furthermore, several users have reported clicking sounds that can be easily remedied by putting some electrical tape on the fan insert and metal base.

Pros
  • Easy to install
  • Beautiful design
  • Powerful, efficient airflow
Cons
  • Allegedly makes clicking sounds
  • Dim lights
  • No remote control

The Curva Sky CF144WW by Emerson is an outdoor and indoor ceiling fan. The fan, which is 44-inches wide, features a removable ‘no-light’ plate, an integrated light fixture, three weather-resistant blades, and comes inclusive of a 6-speed remote control. Its airflow is 3,830 CFM and can easily cool rooms that are up to 144 square feet. Because of its compact design, the Curva Sky’s is perfect for use in rooms with low ceilings. The fan is available in three colors – brushed steel (not to be used outdoors), oil-rubbed bronze, and appliance white.

While it is quiet and powerful, there are a couple of things we did not like about it. Its installation is not at all that easy, and the remote is somehow fussy. Also, like a majority of ceiling fans, the fan’s lights are dim and cannot be used as the primary light source a room.

Pros
  • Very quiet
  • Low profile
  • Powerful
Cons
  • Dim lights
  • The remote control is fussy
  • Hard to install

6. 44″ Casa Habitat8482; Oil-Rubbed Bronze Hugger Ceiling Fan

44" Casa Habitat8482; Oil-Rubbed Bronze Hugger Ceiling Fan
  • Oil-rubbed bronze motor finish with five matching blades.
  • Frosted white glass light kit includes two 60 watt candelabra bulbs.
  • 44" blade span; 14 degree blade pitch.
  • Pull chain operation.
  • Fan height 6.4" ceiling to blade.

Casa Vieja’s Casa Habitat is a flush-mount ceiling fan with a compact design and is perfect for small rooms with low ceilings. The fan features a 153mmx15mm motor, 5-blades, an oil-rubbed bronze finish, pull chains, and a frosted-white glass light kit. The fan’s blades have a 44-inch span and a 14-degree pitch. The Casa Habitat is super quiet and easy to install. In small rooms, this fan will definitely keep you cooled down and has quite the looks.

However, one thing we found a bit weird is the fact that its pull chains are located at the center of the fan’s light. Sadly, the light is dim; but that is to be expected with ceiling fans. If you know what you are doing, installation should be easy. But if you don’t, then have a professional do it for you as the instructions are pretty vague.

Pros
  • Super quiet
  • Perfect for low ceilings
  • Beautiful antique design
Cons
  • Its pull chains run through a hole that is at the center of the light
  • Vague installation instructions
  • Light isn’t that bright

This fan features a 153mmx18mm torque-induction motor, pull-chain controls, and five blades with a 12-inch pitch. The discus is available in white, brushed steel, polished nickel, Roman bronze, and white. With it comes a balancing kit. Its motor is rather quite considering that this is one huge and powerful fan. However, it doesn’t come with remote control. As is the case with most fans, its light isn’t bright. Also, it is worth noting that it comes with 75 watts E11 Halogen bulbs, which means that you will need adapters to switch them with LED bulbs.

Pros
  • Lots of color options
  • Powerful
  • Quiet
Cons
  • No remote control
  • Non-standard halogen bulbs
  • Dim lights

8. Haiku Home L Series 52″ Smart Ceiling Fan, Wi-Fi, Indoor, LED Light, White, Works with Alexa – Professional’s Choice

  • Works with Alexa for voice control, Alexa device sold separately

The Haiku L-Series Smart fan is undoubtedly one of the most expensive ceilings fan available on the market today. If you are a fan of smart tech, then you just might find this fan worth it. The L-Series Smart ceiling fan works well with Amazon’s Alexa and is controlled by an Infrared Remote that’s included in the purchase. The fan is capable of covering a 15ft by 15ft room and is actually Energy-Star certified – exceeding the efficiency requirements by over 450%. It is worth noting that it has LED integrated to it with 16 brightness settings. There is even a mobile you can use to adjust and set your preferences. The great thing about this fan is that it comes factory-balanced and features a sound-tested, exclusive Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Motor.

Nevertheless, it’s a bit difficult to install. Most of its parts are made using plastic, which is quite unsatisfactory considering its price. It is powerful but not as powerful as some of the cheaper fans available in the market.

Pros
  • Infrared remote control
  • 16 brightness levels
  • Compatible with Alexa
Cons
  • Very expensive
  • Lots of plastic parts
  • Setting up is a bit tricky

Unlike all the other fans we have mentioned in our list, this is one that doesn’t have a light fixture included – but you can purchase one if you need it. Despite it being a small fan, it is capable of moving a substantial amount of air. It is very quiet and does not wobble even when it is set at the highest speed. However, it is not for use in large rooms. At the same time, other ceiling fans within this price range come with light kits, but this one doesn’t.

Pros
  • Quite powerful for a fan of its size
  • Super quiet
  • Two mounting options
Cons
  • Some users prefer pull chains over sliding wall control
  • Not for large, spacious rooms

  • No remote control
  • Hard to install

Buying Guide Ceiling Fans

So you’ve taken the step to bring the outdoor breeze into your home. Of course, there are a variety of options available on the market today that you can use to do this. Regardless of whether you have a small room or a large room, there are many varieties to select from. You’ll want to review our guide to find out what you should know about ceiling fans before you go out to purchase one for your home. There are many important things to consider.

Types Of Ceiling Fans

1. Standard Ceiling Fans

This is the typical kind of ceiling fan that you’ll find in homes around the country. They have four to five blades and often include a light fixture. Activated by a pull chain, you will be able to find these on the regular market and they may or may not have a light.

2. Low Profile Ceiling Fan

If you’re in a smaller home, you may not have as much space. You may wish to consider a low profile ceiling fan for your needs. You won’t have as much air flow, but you’ll have a slight breeze and save on space.

3. Energy Star Ceiling Fan

Many ceiling fans are called Energy Star. These use less energy and will help to save on the electricity that is used. They will have an energy star rating and a special seal that shows that they utilize as much as 2 to 30 percent less energy in comparison to a regular type of ceiling fan. You’ll save on the environment as well as on your electricity bill.

4. Dual Motor Ceiling Fans

While these aren’t quite as popular as other models, they are becoming more popular. They offer two speeds as they have two motors. They are an ideal choice for larger rooms or areas. A good example is that a window fan usually has two speeds and these work in similar fashion.

5. Remote Control Ceiling Fan

If you have high ceilings, these are ideal. They allow you to use a remote control to set the speed and turn the ceiling fan off and on. That way you won’t have to stand on a ladder to pull the string or have a long string that is in the way.

6. Damp/Wet Rated Ceiling Fan

Traditional ceiling fans are used indoors. This type of ceiling fan can be used indoors or outdoors. If you’re going to have a lot of moisture, this is the ceiling fan to choose. Wet ceiling fans are ideal for high humidity or outdoor use. The best outdoor ceiling fans are all wet rated.

It’s important, however, to keep in mind that damp rated ceiling fans are water resistant, not waterproof. They work well for bathrooms and kitchens where there is high moisture, but water isn’t falling on them as it would on an uncovered deck. You will want to determine where you’re going to put your ceiling fan before you determine which kind you’ll purchase.

Important Considerations For Ceiling Fans

There are some important factors to consider when purchasing a ceiling fan. You’ll want one that will suit your needs and your home. You’ll want to keep these features in mind:

Size

Will the ceiling fan be suitable for the area that you’re going to be using it in? Smaller fans aren’t going to offer any cooling in large rooms. Larger fans would be overkill in smaller rooms. You’ll want to know the size of your room and purchase the right sized ceiling fan.

Ceiling Height

If you have taller ceilings that are at 7 feet or higher, you may wish to consider a feature called a downrod. Otherwise, if you have a lower ceiling you can use a low profile fan. Regardless, ensure that your ceiling fan is at minimum 7 foot above your floor. This way the air will properly circulate.

Efficiency

Once you’ve determined the price, you’ll want to know how efficient your ceiling fan is going to be. Will it work well? Will it move the air through your room as desired? Will it work all seasons? Many of the top rated ceiling fans will show and energy efficiency rating.

Price

Make sure you’re getting plenty of value for your money. Prices will vary one from another so be sure that you’re checking value and quality for the price. You won’t want to pay more than $100 for a fan that has all of the required features.

Warranty

Keep in mind that longer warranties will cover malfunctions in your fan for a longer period of time. Many brands will offer a five or even a ten-year warranty. Other brands offer lifetime warranties. Be sure to read the fine print and find out. Longer warranties show that the company has more trust in their product. This is a sign of durability.

Style

Now that you’ve worked out all of the technical details, you’ll want to consider your decor, the color, and whether or not the design is one that you can live with. Keep in mind that it should match your decor. A good Example of matching your decor is that a modern looking fans might look very awkward in a more rustic room.

Extras And Accessories

Consider what this ceiling fan can offer you that others may not. You’ll want to consider lighting, how it reflects lights, whether or not it has a regular light or just reflects off of something shiny, and the remote or lack thereof. Can you enjoy it from the comfort of your bed or favorite chair? Or will you have to get up and turn it on and then sit back down?

How To Measure A Ceiling Fan

Ceiling fans are measured according to the size of a room. Larger ceiling fans will require plenty of area around them. Typically you’ll want to keep these measurements in mind:

  • 42-inch ceiling fans can cool small rooms up to 144 square feet
  • 44-inch ceiling fans can cool small areas up to 225 square feet
  • 52-inch ceiling fans can cool large rooms up to 400 square feet
  • 54-inch ceiling fans can cool large areas up to 488 square feet

There are also ceiling fans that are larger than 52 inches and often used for industrial reasons. If you have a larger area that is over 500 square feet and an industrial area, you may wish to invest your money in two fans instead of one and choose a commercial model. This will prevent the fan from overheating and doing more work than it is designed to do. You’ll be much more comfortable if you choose the right fan for the right room size.

Easy Installation Steps For Ceiling Fans

Most people choose professional installation. Of course, if you don’t go that route, you can do it yourself. Just know that it’s challenging and difficult. Only do this if you already have an outlet and don’t need to be rewiring anything.

To replace or to install a ceiling fan, you’ll want to follow these easy steps:

Turn the power off

Before you embark on your project, make sure that you turn the power off. This will prevent you from electrocuting yourself. There are a lot of wires in the electrical box it’s important to make sure that you disconnect them and turn the power off. Ensure that the wires in the ceiling area are off before you begin your installation. This step is very important.

Remove light sources

Remove any light sources and bulb covers on the ceiling. You’ll have to make room for the fan blades. Disconnect all existing fixtures.

Add the hanging bar according to instructions

Add the hanging bar in the ceiling hole. You’ll need to rotate this until it’s perpendicular to the ceiling joists. This bar should expand and dig into the joists to secure itself on the joists themselves. This will become the base of your ceiling fan.

Follow all of the manufacturer instructions for installing the ceiling fan

Typically, you’ll need to color connect wires. Black to black which is hot. White to white which is neutral, and green to green which is ground. Many units may not have a ground wire so be sure to carefully read the installation instructions. It shouldn’t be any different than installing a regular light fixture. If you can install a regular light fixture you should do just fine.

Attach your fan to the box using the enclosed screws. The fan should now be installed. Turn the power back on and make sure that it works properly. If you’ve done it correctly it should work just fine. If it doesn’t work correctly, make sure that your connections are done correctly and double check everything.

One More Thing

Regardless of which model you select. Ensure that the installation won’t be an issue. Many ceiling fans are relatively easy to install. However, there are a few models that are much trickier to install. You’ll want to know which kind you have to make sure that you read and reread the installation instructions to ensure that you fully understand how it works. If the instructions are vague, you’ll want to hire a professional electrician to install if your budget can handle the cost. A professional should be able to install it in short order and without any mishaps. Don’t attempt to install it yourself if the instructions are vague or you’re unsure of how it works. This could be very dangerous.
