2. Dyna-Glo RMC-FA60DGD 30,000-60,000 BTU Liquid Propane Forced Air Heater – Editor’s Choice

Sale
Dyna-Glo RMC-FA60DGD 30,000 - 60,000 BTU Liquid Propane Forced Air Heater#ad
  • 30,000 - 60,000 BTUs
  • Heats up to 1,350 sq.ft.
  • Continuosly Variable BTUs
  • Adjustable Heat Angle
  • Continuos Electronic Ignition - Prevents Dangerous Delayed Ignition

The Dyna-Glo RMC-FA60DGD is mainly used to heat industrial units such as factories and warehouses since it’s capable of producing between 30,000 and 60,000 BTU, which is enough to comfortably heat up an area measuring up to 1,350 square feet. Using the variable heat control system, you can have complete control over the output of heat.

The device features solid construction; the motor is mounted to a solidly constructed bracket fitted to the lower section of the garage heater. It is a more expensive and complicated way to fit the motor but it makes the heater better.

The adjustable leg allows you to make adjustments to the angle (i.e. raise or lower) of heat output. The heater has brass nozzles that are just about indestructible and durable since brass is used instead of steel unlike most other similar offerings in the market.

The 10-feet hose and the regulator that the device comes with can be connected to a 20, 40, or even 100-pound propane cylinder. It has a 0.5 PSI system that provides maximum BTU output regardless of how harsh the climate might be.

The device is incredibly safe to use because of the integrated safety sensor that turns it off in case it flames out or overheats. It also uses a split capacitor motor, which is one of the most reliable options in the market. The heater is also CSA certified for safety while its motor is UL listed. The bottom line is that this heater is both affordable and capable of producing more than sufficient heat for keeping you warm and comfortable not matter how low the temperatures might be.

Pros
  • Heavy-duty device
  • Capable of producing heat instantly
  • No carbon monoxide hazards
  • Auto shut-down safety measures
  • Continuously variable heat regulation
  • Capable of heating a massive space
  • Easy to install and use
  • Compact, portable
  • Adjustable angle
Cons
  • Requires proper ventilation
  • Can be expensive if used constantly
  • Noisy
  • Not ideal for people that work with sawdust

4. Comfort Zone CZQTV5M Ceiling Mount Quartz Heater ,Black, 1500 Watts – Best Electric Garage Heater 120v

Comfort Zone Ceiling Mounted Dual Quartz Radiant Electric Space Heater, 90-Degree Adjustable Tilt, Safety...#ad
  • ☀️EFFICIENT RADIANT HEATING: This radiant quartz heater utilizes two high-quality quartz bulbs to emit heat that is similar to the warmth of the sun. The radiant heat is directed towards nearby objects, delivering gentle and efficient warmth to living spaces, workshops, and garages. With its effective heating mechanism, this heater is an ideal choice for creating a comfortable environment. Voltage: 120.0 volts.
  • ☀️ADJUSTABLE ANGLE FOR CUSTOMIZED HEAT: This quartz heater offers the flexibility to adjust its angle up to 90 degrees, allowing you to precisely direct the warmth to specific areas in your space. Whether you want to focus the heat towards a particular spot or cover a larger area, the adjustable angle feature ensures targeted warmth exactly where it's needed.
  • ☀️EFFICIENT CEILING MOUNT: With its space-saving design, this radiant heater is specifically engineered for easy ceiling installation. By mounting it on the ceiling, you can optimize your floor space in crowded areas such as garages, workshops, or storage areas, ensuring maximum efficiency and convenience.
  • ☀️BUILT-IN HALOGEN LIGHT: Enhancing its functionality, this radiant heater comes with a convenient built-in halogen light. Whether you're working on a project or need better visibility in dimly lit areas, the integrated halogen light provides ample illumination, allowing you to easily view items on your worktable and read instructions or fine print with clarity. Halogen lamps (use only type G9, 120V., 60Hz., 25W) are available at most hardware and home center stores.
  • ☀️ENHANCED SAFETY FEATURES: The radiant heater is equipped with intelligent safety features to provide you with peace of mind. A sturdy metal safety grill effectively prevents the bulbs from coming into contact with other items, ensuring safe operation. Additionally, an integrated sensor automatically shuts off the unit if it detects overheating, protecting against potential hazards and promoting a safe environment.

The Comfort Zone CZQTV5M infrared quartz heater is designed for spot heating in small spaces, such as barns, workshops, and garages. It is typically mounted on a ceiling or wall. All you require is some free space and access to a socket. You can regulate the heating temperature as well as set the thermal output needed, whether it is 760 or 1500 watts, which covers an area of between 85 and 175 square feet. Quartz heaters are also regarded as being energy efficient.

How can you locate the heater efficiently? Users don’t recommend hanging it very high since it usually heats objects present in a room and not the air. The best height for hanging it is therefore around 7-feet. The lamp is constantly lit throughout its operation. Users would prefer if it had a separate heater and light modes to turn of the lamp when needed. Currently, only 3 options are provided: Turn on the heating element, turn on the light, or turn on both. While the user settings issue stays at the conscience of the manufacturer, it is worth noting that about 70 percent of buyers have reported being satisfied with its performance.

Pros
  • Affordable price tag
  • The halogen bulb proves an extra advantage. It can act as a substitute bulb for lighting up the room.
  • The dual heating capacity ensures that the heating system is efficient.
  • It is a ceiling mountable hater, which means that it provides better aerial positioning that’s great for ensuring uniform transfer of heat.
Cons
  • It does not come with additional control features such as automatic overheat shut-off for safety should things get hotter than usual.

5. Fahrenheat FUH54 240-volt Garage Heater, 2500-5000-watt

  • EASY TO USE: This heater includes a ceiling mounting bracket for vertical or horizontal mounting. Adjustable louvers so you can aim your heat directly toward your desired area.

  • COMPATIBILITY: Whether you need 208 or 240 volts, this heater is fully compatible with either electrical system.

If your workshop or garage is under 500 to 600 feet in area and are in need of industrial grade heating performance at budget prices, then you should check out the Fahrenheat FUH54. It is a sturdy 5000-watt forced convection heater capable of covering up to 600 square feet of enclosed floor space. Users have reported using the heater to warm up garages as large as 700 square feet and stated that it was able to maintain temperatures in the mid-60s during winter nights.

It also comes with a high-temperature cut out for shutting down the unit automatically after it reaches an overheating point. The cut-off heater can be incredibly handy in case of failure of the thermostat or if there’s a sudden power surge.

You can hire a professional to install the Fahrenheat FUH54 or you can do it yourself if you are familiar with heavy-duty electronic components. It requires a 240V heavy-duty power supply with an amperage of 26.1, which means that you have to install a 30A breaker in your home circuit. Home circuits typically use 20A circuit breakers, which means that the Fahrenheat FUH54 is too powerful for that. Since it has a 5000W rating, it produces 5000 X 3.41 = 17,050 BTUs of heat every hour.

One of the things that users particularly like about this device is the fact that you can install it virtually anywhere you please. It can be installed on the floor, attached to the wall, or even hang from the ceiling using the ceiling mount bracket that’s included. It supports both vertical and horizontal mounting, and any other position in between. On the front, there are adjustable metal louvers to allow for convenient controlling of the direction of heat output. You can use the FUH54 as the primary heat source in your workshop/garage or as an auxiliary heat source for larger spaces such as service stations, worksites, storehouses, etc.

To allow for easy control of temperature, the manufacturer has included an in-built single pole thermostat with a range of between 45 and 135°F. While you won’t find many fancy features in the FUH54, the designers certainly made sure that they got the basics right. For instance, the heater’s fan doesn’t activate until the heating element has reached a minimum temperature point. The delayed fast action is for ensuring that the heater never blows any freezing air at your face and only activates after the heating element is warm enough. However, the intelligent design hardly ends there – once the desired temperature is achieved, the heater turns of to prevent itself from heating the air beyond the selected temperature.

However, the fan will continue running until the heating element has cooled down. This results in a steady, consistent flow of warm air constantly. It also prolongs the life of components because the heating element is gradually cooled down by the running fan rather than suddenly losing temperature. In terms of safety, the heater meets all the standards because it is UL, ETL, and CSA listed.

If you don’t have too much to spare in your garage, you shouldn’t worry since the FUH54 measures just 14.5 by 11.25 by 12.5 inches and weighs just 29 pounds. The 29-pound weight is impressive if you take into account the fact that it has a heavy duty stainless steel body as well as a rugged wall mount bracket.

Pros
  • Very quiet operation
  • Robust construction ensures a longer lifespan
  • In-built bracket for easier installation
  • Great for small-to medium-sized workshops, garages, and cellars
Cons
  • Installation is complicated because it has to be hard wired into a socket.

Mr. Heater is one of the most prominent and reliable names in the heating solutions industry. Their Big Maxx range of garage heaters are designed with one thing in mind: delivering the best quality garage heaters that money can buy. The F260560 model is a heavy, large unit that costs more than twice as much as similar 5000W electric models. Nonetheless, considering that it pumps 80,000 BTUs of heat in an hour, why should you care about all this stuff? After all, it the sheer performance that you’re paying for, right? And thanks to the aluminum tubular heat exchanger, you’ll get all the performance you need, along with maximum efficiency and durability.

If we haven’t mentioned it yet, this heater runs on natural gas. As such, it’s an excellent choice for garages, workshops, barns, service stations, etc. although installing this heater is slightly harder than installing an electric heater, it much easier than installing the conventional gas powered heater. The manufacturer has, in an attempt to make things easier for you, included a power exhaust that allows for both horizontal and vertical venting, which gives you a wide range of options when choosing the right spot to install this 25.5 x 18.875 x 17.125-inch, 90 pound rectangular metal box.

It gives you exterior access to the thermostat controls and AC terminals, as well as the support for ceiling installation through 2 angular brackets that are included in the package. Its low-profile design ensures that you can mount it an inch away from the ceiling, which gives out a higher clearance between the heater and the garage floor. You also have the freedom of using both right and left sides piping for the gas, which also goes for flue and electrical connections.

Some of the unit’s remarkable features include the self-diagnostic control module, spark ignition, and finger-proof exhaust grills and intake. The gas is supplied via a 3/4 inch MPT pipe, and you can run the heater using LPG rather than propane. All you need to do is use the natural gas to LPG conversion kit that comes with the package for free. Since no thermostat is included, you might have to purchase an external thermostat to maintain steady temperatures in your garage space.

The unit also requires a 115-volt power supply, which ideally runs the ignition system. Its total current draw is 6 amps. You get a 3-year warranty on the heater, and its running costs are considerably lower compared to those of an equivalent electric heater. That’s largely because natural gas is significantly cheaper than electricity. The F260560 MHU80NG Heater is ideal for both commercial and consumer usage, and it can effortlessly heat a 3 to 4 car garage.

Pros

  • The venting components are sold separately

A Definitive Guide for Choosing a Garage Heater

If you are looking to purchase the best garage heater for your workshop or garage, you might feel overwhelmed by the options available at your disposal. The truth is that there are several hundreds of models on the market, but that alone does not mean that choosing a good garage heater should be daunting when you’re aware of what you should be looking for. Before we can explore the best garage heater models available, we will take you through the garage heater types, shed some light on the amount of power a heater needs as well as explore the important safety features that a garage heater should have.

Garage Heater Types

The first thing you will need to do is research on the garage heater types you can buy. There is more than one model, so it is essential that you select one that will provide you with sufficient heat depending on its intended purpose.

* Fan-Forced Garage Heater

These types of heaters usually have a fan and are simple to install. They are arguably the most common type of garage heaters. Electricity is usually converted to heat and the fan then draws in the cool air from your garage and then blows it out after it has been warmed by the heating element. These heaters can heat up your workshop quickly and dissipate lots of heat.

* Infrared or Radiant Garage Heaters

An infrared or radiant type of garage heater usually directs heat towards objects which are nearby. Their principle of working is similar to how the sun heats the earth, so they provide more comfortable heating as compared to fan forced heaters. The only drawback about these heaters is that you must be in close proximity to them for you to enjoy maximum comfort hence they are quite unpopular when compared to their fan-forced counterparts.

* Natural Gas, Kerosene or Diesel Garage Heaters

These heater types usually are powered by fuels instead of electricity. They can heat up your garage quite fast, and since they do not rely on an electrical outlet, they are incredibly portable. While they are excellent for heating large rooms, you should be careful with such heaters because they could be hazardous to use in enclosed spaces.

How Much Power Does The Workshop Heater Require?

When you buy a garage heater, it will have a power rating in the form of BTU. The higher the BTU and watts of your heater, the more powerful it will be and the bigger the space it can heat. You should bear in mind that the mentioned power rating typically considers the best possible conditions, so you should be careful buying a heater whose power exceeds what you really need. This allows for poor insulation or draughts as well.

Smaller garages often benefit the most from an infrared or radiant heater. Such heaters are suitable for smaller spaces, and since they heat the objects instead of the air, they do not lose heat to draughts and ventilation ducts. You could also buy a medium-sized, fan-forced garage heater for a smaller space. A fan-forced heater with a power rating of 1.5kw would be ideal for a smaller garage, but if your garage is large, you should consider going with a power rating of 4,000 to 5,000 watts.

You should also take the height of the ceiling into account. If your garage has a tall ceiling, then you will obviously need a powerful heater.

Portable or Fixed Garage Heaters

When you buy your garage heater, you will need to know whether it remains in the same place every time or can be moved around. If you are looking for a heater that you can move from one garage to the other, or just move it around your garage, then a portable heater is your best bet. Portable heaters are easy to move between different locations, and you just have to plug them into your electrical outlet. And if you want ultimate portability without having to worry about electrical outlets, a fuelled heater would be the best option.

And if you do not need to move your heater, you should consider buying a fixed heater. These heaters are customarily connected to the electrical outlet and set permanently, usually higher up, but they could be fitted near to the floor if need be. There are numerous benefits of buying a fixed heater including; you must not worry about getting a safe place to fix it, you will never knock it over accidentally, and you will have more space in your workshop, particularly when it is fixed higher up.

Safety Features of Garage Heaters

When you’re buying a garage heater, you need to ensure that there are sufficient safety features to protect you while you are working in your garage.

* The Tip Over Switch

It is quite common for equipment to get knocked over every time you are working in your workshop, so it is vital to have a heater with a tip over switch. The heater will automatically turn off when it is knocked over.

* Overheat Protection

Since you will probably have your heater running for more extended periods, the chances are that quite often, it will overheat and fail to function correctly. Overheat protection ensures that your heater turns off to protect itself from extremely high temperatures which could damage its internal components.

* Cool Touch

When your heater is fixed on the floor or workbench, you do not want it to be too hot for you to touch. Whether there are kids, adults or pets who are not aware that the heater’s surface could be hot, heaters which get hot during operation could be a hazard. For optimal safety, it is best that you go for a cool-touch heater.

Extra Features

When purchasing a garage heater, you want to make sure that it comes with all attributes you could think about. The more customizable your heater is, the better since you can get to use it in the best way possible. If you have a basic mindset, you will have problems such as having a single heat setting and the heat emitted could be blown in the wrong direction so you will not enjoy the heater’s output.

  • Adjustable Louvers – For you to direct the heat in the direction you want, you should go for a heater with adjustable louvers.
  • Length of Power Cord – When purchasing a garage heater, you must make sure that its power cable is long enough to let you place the heater at any desired location in your workshop. It is not easy to find a safe-enough extension lead that you could use with high-power output garage heaters so make sure that your heater comes with a cord that is long enough.
  • Carry Handle – If you want a portable garage heater, ensure it has a carry handle so that you can pick it and relocate it with great ease. While this is not a crucial feature, it will definitely make your work easier.
  • Wheels – Castors and wheels are excellent for your garage heater because they let you move your machine without lifting it. Since garage heaters are more powerful than other heater types, they will probably have larger and heavier components. Lifting the heater every time could strain your muscles so being in a position to move it on casters or wheels is an excellent option.

How Do I Calculate a Garage Heater’s Thermal Output?

Heaters are measured in different ways depending on whether it is an electric model or a propane model. Propane heaters are measured by BTU/hr outputs while the electric models are measured in Watts. Either way, the higher the number, the stronger the heater and the larger the area it will be capable of fully warming.

If you’re looking at an electric heater…
Remember it takes only a simple calculation to know how strong a heater you need. You can calculate the number of watts needed by multiplying the room’s area (in square feet) times 8, and round up the resulting number. This is an approximation, but it is generally a solid one.

If you’re looking at a propane heater…
You will be looking at BTU/hour numbers and there is a big difference in the percentage of useful heat that is produced by 100% of the gas consumed by the heater. There isn’t necessarily as good an exact rule of thumb that converts a pure number to the ideal heater for a square foot to heat conversion table.

Heater Size AFUE
<18,000 BTU/hr. 57%
Between 18,000 and 20,000 BTU/hr. 58%
Between 20,000 and 27,000 BTU/hr. 63%
Between 27,000 and 46,000 BTU/hr. 64%
Greater than 46,000 BTU/hr. 65%

That being said, there is plenty of available information on what is appropriate size for the space being heated. A 5000 BTU/hr propane heater, for example, is good for a small garage or work area while a more spacious large workshop or garage would need something up in the 17000 BTU or 18000 BTU range. If you’re looking for heating of a larger area it’s also extremely important to take a look at designed home models versus commercial heater models.

You will find that this guide is geared towards helping consumers make the smartest and most informed decision when it comes to finding the best propane or electric garage heaters that are currently available on the market today.

Secrets of Heating The Garage Efficiently & Safely

A good portable heater can be an incredible piece of equipment. Many individuals have that large work space that offers a lot but the expense of full scale insulation and centered heating might be impractical or even impossible. Whether creating a warmer garage space to do auto work during a cold and bitter Midwestern winter or creating your own exercise room, gym, or workshop, keeping warm during the cold winter months is crucial and these heaters are the way to do it.

What Should You Consider?

The fixed heater is a great idea if it is plausible. This prevents the common issues with portable options like tipping over, or too much heat set by carelessly kept flammables. If a fixed in heater is an option this can be a great choice because during planning and installation by a professional all these considerations will be taken into account and the space optimized.

A portable heater isn’t dangerous in and of itself but any consumer will need to take some common sense precautions such as:

  • Keeping entry and exit routes clear
  • Keep away from flammables like gasoline, oil, and paint
  • Don’t set up with a stretched cord where tripping could be a common fault

Following these simple steps will help to keep an area safe, since safety always comes first. Once these are set, getting the most out of a heater means simply setting it up in a way that directs heat either to the center of the garage where it can disperse out naturally or channeling a heat flow towards a specific work area where you will be spending most of your time. This helps ensure that you get the most out of your heating setup and will have a fully functional work area to enjoy.

Professional Garage Heating Tips

There is nothing better than a warm toasty garage whether working on the car, working at your own personal little workshop, or working out in a warm gym while the outside is less than hospitable. The garage heater will be the center point of your efforts to create a little slice of paradise during the long winters, but if you want to get the most out of it then that also means taking a few supporting steps that will help multiply your results.

The proper sized portable heater is a great first step, but if you want to set yourself up like a pro then make sure you tackle these other points, as well:

Insulation
This is always a big one. Heating the garage is going to be a lot easier if the heat doesn’t just leak right outside. By nature garages are much simpler structures than homes and they’re generally not designed to be energy efficient. That means there’s nothing in the design to keep heat in. Remember the ceiling as well as the walls, and gaps around windows and doors.

Adding insulation will help make sure draft is minimized and the heat that is in the garage stays there for much longer. Some people find this is enough by itself to be reasonably warm, or that even using a small heater takes very little time with proper insulation.

Choose the Right Heater
Trying to save a little bit of money by going one size smaller is not a smart choice. Get a heater that is the correct size to get the best overall results. This isn’t a place to skimp.

Don’t DIY Install Unless You’re A Pro
Better to have the installation done once and done right the first time. When everything is done correctly so you have the right heater installed the most efficient way possible and the garage fully insulated, at that point you can simply enjoy the benefits of having a fully heated garage no matter what the outside temperature is doing.

While it can be tempting to try to do it yourself, unless you’re really good and know how to do this properly, pay a pro. It not only saves you enormous amounts of time and headaches but it also means you don’t have to worry about the negatives that can come from a poor installation.

At that point all you need to do is stay on top of proper garage heater care and maintenance and you will be in great shape.

One final note: if you go with a propane model you will need to keep an eye on fuel levels and be vigilant for any signs of a gas leak. As long as you do this, you will be in great shape!

FAQs

Is a Propane Heater Safe for Garage Use?

Using a propane garage heater is certainly safe. However, there are a number of things that you need to keep in mind before settling for this type of heater for your space. First and foremost, there needs to be adequate oxygen in the garage to allow the gas to burn in the right manner. Second, you need to make sure that you’re not working with any flammable items in the space. So, if you plan on working with things like gasoline and spray paints, then a propane garage heater would not be recommended.

When using the heater in your garage, you do not really have to store the gas cylinder outside. Some of the tanks are ideal for indoor use, but most of them are on the smaller end of the size spectrum. If you want a larger propane tank, then you will certainly have to keep it outside.

Even if it’s possible to use a propane heater for your space, it doesn’t hurt to look at the other options before making the final decision. There are numerous tanks in the market that are made for garage use. For example, if you have an electric supply, you can benefit more by having an energy efficient, electric garage heater.

Is Insurance Necessary If I Get a Heater?

If you have a detached garage, then you are going to need additional insurance coverage for it. That is because most home insurance policies do not cover external garages and workshops. As such, any accident or incident caused by a propane heater won’t be compensated.

Ideally, ensure that the heater is properly fitted and equipped with the latest protection features to reduce the chances of accidents. However, getting the extra insurance will ascertain protection from unforeseen incidents.

What Type of Plug Do These Heaters Use?

Well, the kind of plug that your heater will use will mostly depend on the power as well as the size of the unit. Each model tends of vary when it comes to power usage.

If your outlet only accommodates 120V heaters, then ensure that the model you pick requires the same voltage. You can ask an electrician to take a look at your plug to know what type of model you need to purchase or whether you will need a different type of outlet installed.

Does an Electric Heater Require Hard Wiring?

If you are buying an electric model to heat your workspace, it’s important to ensure that it’s installed properly. It can be hard to ascertain whether your electric garage heater should be hardwired or not and that is because it depends on the model of the unit that you pick. Some of these heaters are designed for permanent use in the same spot. Such units, obviously need to be hardwired to your electric supply. On the contrary, there are units designed to be plugged into an outlet. Yes, both models emit the same kind of heat, but the hardwired garage heaters require installation from an experienced and certified professional.

Always check the item description when shopping for a heater to determine whether it can be simply plugged into an outlet or whether you will have to avail a professional for the hard wiring task. Before purchasing the garage heater, it’s ideally smart to have an electrician check the voltage output of your electric supply. Most of the garages have a standard high-voltage output. However, there a number that have a lower-voltage that’s used for lighting circuits. It would be hazardous to use the latter to power a heater.

What BTU Amount is Required to Heat a 2-Car Garage?

Typically, a 45,0000 BTU is needed to heat a 2 car garage and 60,000 BTU for a 3-car space. As for the low-intensity infrared tube heaters, 30,000 BTU is needed to heat a 2-car garage and 50,000 BTU is recommended for 3-car garages.

What Size Is Ideal for My Garage?

The easiest way to estimate the ideal size of your garage heater is to follow the basic rule of 10-watts per sq foot of space. So for instance, if your garage is 24 by 24 feet, it has an area of 528Sq feet and thus would need a 5280-watt heater.

How much Does It Cost To Run an Electric Heater?

Well, this can be simply done by multiplying the price of your electricity per KW hour by the input power in kW. So, if you pay 7.53 cents per kW hour and run a 5000 watt or 5kW garage heater, then you would multiply 7.53 by 5kW to get 37.65 cents per hour to run the garage heating unit.

Conclusion

Getting a quality heater for your garage is one of the best ways of ascertaining warm temperature in your workshop during the cold season. As mentioned in the post, there are various types of heaters for various types of garages as well as environments, so do keep that in mind.

If you are on the hunt for a unit that will meet all your needs, then going through many reviews on the models online will certainly shed some light.

Regardless of the model you settle for, make safety your top priority. Most of the retailers, like Amazon, have heaters of all kinds, most of which go at reasonable prices with excellent safety and operation features.
